Project Request:
To provide accessible toilet rooms for the correctional facility ball field and to expand the capacity of current toilet rooms.
Project Solution:
The new toilet facility on the ball field at Woodbourne Correctional Facility consists of a 1,000-sf masonry structure with an inmate group toilet room, separate guard toilet, and the ball field’s equipment storage. After evaluating the needs, exploring options and providing a rough cost estimate, it was determined that a new building would be more cost-effective. The occupant load used for the fixture calculation, during peak hours at the ball field, was 500 people. The calculation resulted in a new building that provides three toilets, four urinals and three lavatories. As requested by the Department of Corrections and Community Supervision (DOCS), one of each fixture must be accessible. Finishes were selected for their performance, durability, and inmate safety. The exterior materials were selected for their low maintenance qualities and durability as well. Energy Star labeled, FEMP listed or NYSERDA recommended products and materials for HVAC equipment, lighting electronics, appliances and construction products and assemblies were used. Low VOC emitting materials with recycled content were specified and thermally broken frames and low-E glazing with 1” insulating safety glass were installed.
